Megumi Shauna Arai

Arai (b. 1989, Portland, OR, USA) is a Japanese-Jewish textile artist based in New York. She brings the Japanese tradition of  Boro (meaning “rags” or “tatters”) into the 21st century, incorporating her own naturally made dyes, along with vintage textiles and tilling.

Her work is comparable to the celebrated quilts of the American South—which are also often made with salvaged textiles—but have a very different compositional sensibility, featuring collage-like overlays.

Arai’s work has recently exhibited as part of Object & Thing’s At The Noyes House, in collaboration with Mendes Wood DM and Blum and Poe.
