RITES OF SPRING

New York, NY—TIWA Gallery is proud to present its first dual exhibition uniting the practices of two artists working across ceramic, textile, metalwork and lighting.

Aaron Angell, working from Troy Town in Hoxton, London UK, has created a series of over twenty vessels glazed with onishino and acid-oribe glaze, including tsubo and hanaire vessels, large lidded mizusashi jars and platters, specifically designed as containers for new spring blooms.

Separately, Brooklyn-based design studio Cadis’ nod to the brilliance of nature at springtime takes form as a series of lighting works that both physically mimic the natural forms of spring, even using plant material in their creation: Cadis’ moulded forms are created from sewn hemp silk naturally-dyed by textile artist Cara Marie Piazza with florals, including marigold and madder, in vivid reds, oranges and mustards.

The show title is a direct reference to classical composer Igor Stravinsky's 1913 ballet Le Sacre du Printemps, a musical-choreographic work representing the mystery and great surge of the creative power of spring. To this point, the opening of the show is tied directly to the vernal equinox, the cosmic moment when winter’s embrace loosens its hold.
